Lime is the most widely utilized chemical in the treatment of contaminated soil or tailings ponds for industrial wastewater effluent. The term “Lime” can refer to a variety of forms of Calcium oxide, CaO. In most cases the form that is utilized for treatment of contaminated soil or industrial wastewater is the form Hydrated Calcium Oxide, chemical symbol Ca(OH)²,also referred to as Hydrated Lime, which is received by bulk truck or in the form of a powder. To best utilize the Hydrated Lime, it is almost always made into a slurry with water before metering it into the final process. The Lime slurry can be made in either a batch or continuous process depending upon the requirements of the final process to be treated. The batch method process technology allows for the preparation of a fixed amount of Lime slurry with a specific amount of Lime content. This type of system can incorporate a mixing tank and the metering systems all located in the base skirt of the Hydrated Lime silo. Usually this type of process requires a second storage tank for the accumulation and storage of the prepared slurry prior to being dosed into the waste treatment process. This second storage tank would be located outside of the silo skirt area.

The continuous Lime slurry system has the advantage that it can also be located within the skirt of the hydrated lime silo but the secondary lime slurry storage tank is not required. As in the case of the batch system, a slurry mix tank is used to prepare the lime slurry, however complex metering control devices feed the incoming hydrated lime powder and dilution water at fixed ratios.

Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying systems can be utilized in the case where the slurry is being prepared in a mix tank located remotely from the bulk Hydrated Lime storage silo.

The equipment design expertise for these types of systems is available from Semco Systems Limited.
